Convergence

Tools

  • Goniometer
  • Pencil or other stimulus like a popsicle stick

Assessment

  • Sit directly in front of patient
  • Move stimulus toward bridge of patient’s nose, beginning about 1 foot away
  • “Keep both eyes on the pencil. Let me know when you beginning to see double”
  • Measure that distance with goniometer (from space between eyes to the stimulus)

Score

  • Record the number of inches at which a person saw double
  • Near point of convergence is typically 2-3 inches
